We developed the graphite-inspired premium packaging design for Gyeongbokgung Soju, a traditional Korean soju brand by GBG Spirits.
This project is built around the concept “A deep connection sealed in a black bottle — where Seoul’s tradition meets the world’s oak.” The product combines traditional Korean soju craftsmanship with European oak barrels typically used for wine aging, utilizing an Echo Aging process in which sound and vibration contribute to deep maturation. The packaging was designed to visually translate this unique production philosophy.
Rather than applying traditional symbols decoratively, we focused on selecting a cultural element that structurally aligned with the brand narrative. The Gonryongpo, the ceremonial robe of Korean kings, was chosen as the central motif. Its rounded silhouette and symbolic authority naturally echo the circular form of oak casks, allowing tradition, aging, and prestige to merge into a single visual language.
A deep black base color was used throughout the package, with all graphic elements rendered exclusively in gold foil. This restrained palette reinforces a sense of refinement and authority, while the contrast between matte black and gold reflects the resonance and depth implied by the Echo Aging concept. By eliminating unnecessary color and ornamentation, the design achieves a clean yet highly sophisticated presence appropriate for a premium lineup.
As a result, the final packaging clearly communicates Gyeongbokgung Soju’s positioning at the intersection of tradition and modernity, East and West. It elevates the product as a refined gift item while consistently expressing the brand’s premium identity through structure, symbolism, and material restraint.
